What is Careers Unplugged and why does it exist?
In a nutshell, Careers Unplugged is a weekly podcast hosted by former CEO and global change specialist, Stuart Hayes.
The show has a conversational style and features Stuart’s interviews with guests from all walks of life, who share their journeys, struggles, insights and the golden nuggets of wisdom they have found. Real people and real stories of life, impact and change
OK… so who is Stuart Hayes & why did he start Careers Unplugged?
Stuart studied Economics at University, was recruited by KPMG, head hunted by Andersen and eventually became a CEO ‘Mr Fix It’ for Andersen and then private business owners.
For 12 years, his day to day existence involved being parachuted into ailing companies in Asia, the UK and Australia to help them restructure, or die. His role was to be the architect of change, diagnosing dangerous issues and implementing solutions to turn these failing corporations around.
Very few people anywhere in the world have the length and breadth of his “crisis at the coalface” experience, and yet remain accessible to everyday people.
Can you imagine what it would be like to have someone of Stuart’s caliber helping you get straight about what you need to do to achieve your goals in life, career or business?

So why did he start Careers Unplugged? Bottom line – he stuffed up!
Even though Stuart had achieved great success as a CEO and in his own businesses, in 2006 he tasted the bitterness of failure when a business he founded needed to be closed… and closure meant significant personal and financial cost.
What unfolded after this period was a sequence of events that led Stuart to reflect on his career, on his life and on his approach to business. It was evident to Stuart he had not sought independent advice and guidance of the type he had patiently and effectively provided to others, and instead had diverted his entire resources into a struggling business. A huge & expensive mistake!
Winding the clock forward, Stuart’s personal mission evolved to helping people and businesses avoid the types of mistakes he had made, so their own careers would thrive and positively impact the communities they touched. Careers Unplugged was conceived with long-time friend Rich Sayer as one part of their mission to make sure no-one who needed help and inspiration would be without it… not to mention, the opportunity to meet and interview the types of people who are guests on the show!
